How to Prepare for Oral Surgery

Surgery is often the best option for repairing certain oral health issues, such as tumors or oral reconstruction. And although oral procedures are typically quick and, for the most part painless, there is still some preparation that is needed before you arrive at the dentist office. Here are some tips on how to prepare for oral surgery.

Check with Your Dentist

The foremost step in preparing for surgery is to meet with your dentist. Your dentist may have special instructions in regard to your particular situation and these need to be followed. While you are speaking with your dentist, be sure to ask any questions that you may have, as this will help alleviate any concerns about the process.

Transportation

Always Have Transportation Options when Having a Surgical Procedure Done.

When you have a surgical procedure done, it often entails the use of anesthetic, and this can temporarily hinder your ability to operate motor vehicles. It is for this reason that you should always arrange for someone to pick you up from the office after the surgery is completed. In fact, many dentists require that you have transportation arrangements in place before they will operate.

Eating and Drinking

Dental Surgery may Require that You Forgo Food or Drink Prior to the Visit.

Depending on the type of surgery that is taking place, you may need to curb your eating and drinking habits. For instance, some surgeries will require that no food or drink be consumed within 8 hours of the procedure, while others may only request that you only minimize your fluid intake.

Clothing

It may come as a surprise that clothing is a concern when it comes to dental procedures, but this is the case. When you are preparing for oral surgery, try to wear loose-fitting clothes, so that you are comfortable during the process. Not only this, but it is best to wear clothing that will not be ruined by stains, as there is a chance that chemicals and other fluids could stain the clothes.

Be Ready for Surgery

Having an oral surgery procedure completed can be a bit stressful, especially for first-timers. When you are prepping for surgery, make sure that you talk with your dentist about any concerns that you may have. In addition, it is important to arrange for transportation from the dentist office, while also monitoring your eating and drinking habits. Lastly, consider wearing loose-fitting clothing so that you are comfortable while in the dentist chair. By keeping these tips in mind, you should be better prepared for oral surgery.
