CROWNS AND BRIDGES

WHAT ARE Crowns?

A crown is a cap that covers the entire surface of a tooth, restoring it to its original shape and size. Crowns protect and strengthen the tooth structure, which cannot be restored by any other type of dental restoration. Although there are several types of crowns, porcelain (tooth-coloured) crowns are the most popular because they resemble natural teeth the best. They are crafted to match the shape, size, and colour of natural teeth. Crowns are highly durable and can last many years, but they may eventually need to be replaced.

Reasons for Crowns:

  • Tooth has a root canal
  • Decayed teeth
  • Fractured fillings
  • Broken teeth
  • Cosmetic enhancement

WHAT ARE BRIDGES?

Dental bridges literally bridge the gap created by one or more missing teeth. A bridge consists of two or more crowns for the teeth on either side of the gap, with a false tooth/teeth in between. Bridges are cemented onto existing teeth by the dentist and can be easily removed. If a patient prefers an alternative to a bridge, options include placing an implant in the space of the missing tooth.

Reason for Bridges:

  • Replace a missing tooth
  • Restore your smile
  • Prevent your remaining teeth from shifting
  • Maintain your facial shape

This procedure generally requires 2 appointments to complete. It is common for patients to experience tooth sensitivity, gum soreness, and general discomfort with the teeth after undergoing this procedure. However, these symptoms typically resolve after the placement of the permanent crown.

While your temporary crown is in place, it’s important to avoid chewing sticky or hard foods. Temporary crowns are placeholders and are typically made of plastic or soft metal. Once your permanent crown is in place, you may experience some pressure for several days, and your bite may feel different. If these sensations persist for longer than two or three days, please call our office immediately.
